Getting to Lake Kariba & Abangane Houseboat

Reaching Lake Kariba for your houseboat charter is easier than you think. Whether you are flying commercial, setting off on a self-drive cross-country road trip, chartering a private plane, crossing on the overnight ferry, or flying your own light aircraft, there is a seamless route from South Africa and the broader SADC region straight to our home berth at Pama Harbour.

As the owner and operations manager of Abangane, I personally oversee our guests’ arrivals on the ground. Together with Captain Obert and Chef Frank, our goal is to make your transition from the road or runway onto the boat completely effortless.

Select your preferred mode of travel below for complete, step-by-step logistics, maps, schedules, and border checklists:

1. Commercial Flights & Ground Transfers

The most popular commercial route for South African and international visitors. Fly into Harare (HRE) or Victoria Falls (VFA) via daily flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town on Airlink, SAA, or FlySafair, followed by a comfortable road shuttle or connecting light air charter straight to Kariba.

2. Self-Drive & Border Crossing Guide

A favorite option for fishing parties, families, and road-trippers traveling with vehicles, 4x4s, or boat trailers. Get full driving route details from Cape Town and Johannesburg via Beitbridge, essential border documentation (including the mandatory SATMS app declaration), grocery stopover tips, and secure 24/7 guarded parking at Pama Harbour.

3. Private Air Charters

Maximize your time on the water by flying privately straight into Kariba Airport (KAB). Connect seamlessly from Harare or Vic Falls with trusted charter operators like Mack Air, Executive Air, HAC, and Falcon Air, complete with pre-arranged ground pickups to Pama Harbour.

4. Kariba Overnight Car Ferry

Combine a Victoria Falls or Hwange safari with your Kariba charter. Board the overnight vehicle and passenger ferry at Mlibizi on the western end of the lake and wake up in Kariba Town. View updated sailing schedules, vehicle pricing, and our personal harbor meet-and-greet services upon docking.

5. Self-Fly Safari Guide (Private Pilots & Aircraft Owners)

Written pilot-to-pilot by experienced private aviators. Everything aircraft owners and flying clubs need to know about flying cross-border to Kariba (FVKB), including preferred SA exit ports (Polokwane, Lanseria, Upington), Zimbabwean entry clearance numbers (CAAZ), WHO disinsection rules, high-vis apron requirements, and 5-hour endurance route leg calculations.
